Developing the Ideal Business Blog
Blogging—what seems to be a buzzword now, is actually a pretty profitable endeavor, if you know what you’re doing. It gives everyone a free opportunity to generate organic traffic to their websites. Essentially, the higher your website ranks on search engines (Google, Bing, etc.), the more likely people are to click on it. Search engines use crawlers to index relevant content from around the web for different queries.
The indexing process typically follows a set of criteria, such as relevance, updates, keywords, etc. By optimizing for this, websites can improve their ranking and, as a result, boost their reach. The benefits of blogging are plenty, but here are some things you should do to succeed at it.
Identify Your Audience
It doesn’t take a genius to recognize that you should be blogging within your industry. For instance, you won’t see a plumbing website blogging about videogames (except maybe Mario). However, there’s more to identifying your audience than just writing for an industry. For instance, if you’re promoting a particular product in a specific place, alter your keywords and topics to focus on that product and place. This will maximize your reach to the relevant people.
Promote Your Blog
While organic traffic through search engine optimization (SEO) practices is effective, it doesn’t mean you can’t promote your blog. You should be active on social media and make liberal use of its features to promote your blog.
Create Engaging Content
The bulk of your effort should be focused on producing engaging and SEO-friendly content. Firstly, make sure your blog contributes to peoples’ knowledge. One of the criteria used by search engine crawlers is the relevance of the content. If your content isn’t answering questions, then it won’t rank well.
Secondly, make sure your blog’s topic isn’t too broad. Ideally, you want a specific topic with an equally specific response. Additionally, make sure your main points are summarized or mentioned at the beginning of your post. The structure of your blog should be such that the main points are mentioned at the beginning, and the rest of the post supports said points.
Lastly, infuse some personality into your blogs. Blog posts should reflect your brand identity. Your readers shouldn’t feel like they’re reading something written by a robot; the blog should read easily.
Personality will help distinguish your blog from your competitors’ blogs. One way to do this is to use relevant photographs. Not only do these differentiate your blogs, but they also make them easier to read (pictures are worth a thousand words, after all).
Photography can liven up a dry blog, and it may be just what your blog is missing.
